Amsterdam's waste management authority deployed specialised "Kartonvreter" (cardboard eater) trucks after residential neighbourhoods became overwhelmed by e-commerce packaging. The oversized box problem isn't abstract — it's visible on every street corner after a peak shopping period.

The EU just put a number on your void space.

PPWR enters into force

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 takes effect. Article 24 sets the void-space rule — and counts filler materials (air cushions, bubble wrap, foam, paper) as empty space, not product.

Main provisions apply

Core PPWR obligations take effect EU-wide. Brands must start adapting packaging design, procurement, and documentation.

Sales packaging deadline + methodology published

Sales packaging must be reduced to "minimum necessary," and the Commission must publish the official empty-space formula: (Box − Product Volume) ÷ Box Volume × 100.

The 50% cap applies from 1 January 2030. Fines up to €200K (NL/DE) or €100K (FR) per violation.

Article 68 lets each member state set penalties that must be "effective, proportionate, and dissuasive." NL: avg €15K, up to €200K for repeat offences, plus €5K/week. DE: up to €200K. FR: up to €100K. Plus recalls, withdrawal orders, customs holds, and marketplace delisting.

An order number and three dimensions per item, in centimetres. Quantity, weight and a SKU label improve the result but are optional. No customer names, no addresses, no prices, no product titles. Delete those columns before you export if you'd rather. Any column naming, any language, CSV or Excel: Tetrik maps them for you and asks if it's unsure.

No. Tetrik doesn't touch your WMS, your carrier or your box supplier. It reads an export and hands you a box set: dimensions, how many of each, and the reorder points. What you do with that list is yours: retender it, phase it in over a stock cycle, drop a size.

Often that's the case with the most to gain. Three sizes across a wide SKU mix usually means one of them is doing work it was never shaped for. Tetrik will tell you whether a fourth size pays for itself, or whether two better-chosen sizes beat the three you have.

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 is in force, and Article 24's ≤50% void cap applies from 1 January 2030. The Commission publishes the official measuring formula by February 2028, which is when arguing about how void is calculated stops being an option. Fines run to €200K per violation in the Netherlands and Germany. See the timeline →
